Dr. Sherwin Aaron Allen

Dr. Sherwin Allen, Sr., affectionately known as "Doc," was born on February 18, 1944, in El Dorado, Arkansas, to the late Aaron Allen and Fannie Mae Allen. A loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, educator, mentor, and friend, he dedicated his life to uplifting others through faith, leadership, and education. At an early age, Sherwin accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and became a member of First Baptist Church in El Dorado, Arkansas. His faith remained the foundation of his life and guided him throughout his personal and professional journey.

Sherwin graduated from Washington High School in El Dorado, Arkansas, before attending Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. He later earned a Master of Music Education from North Texas State University and a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from the University of North Texas.

Dr. Allen devoted more than five decades to education, believing that every child deserved the opportunity to succeed. He began his career in 1964 as Band Director at J. E. Wallace High School in Fordyce, Arkansas. He later served as Band Director at Albert Sidney Johnston High School in Austin, Texas, and as Assistant Band Director at Lyndon B. Johnson High School, where he inspired students through his love of music and commitment to excellence.

His passion for developing young people led him into educational leadership. He served as Assistant Principal at Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas, Texas, before becoming Principal of Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary School and later Maynard H. Jackson Elementary School. Under his leadership, Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary School was recognized by Phi Delta Kappa as one of the top three schools in the United States. The school's success was later chronicled in William W. Wayson's Up From Excellence and recognized in the Congressional Record by Congressman Martin Frost. Maynard H. Jackson Vanguard School was also selected by the Texas Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development as a model school for the State of Texas.

Dr. Allen's distinguished career continued as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum in the Roosevelt School District in Phoenix, Arizona, and later as Superintendent of the Benton Harbor School District in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

In 1997, Dr. Allen founded Children First Academy, where he served as Superintendent and Executive Director. Through campuses in Dallas and Houston, Texas, he remained steadfast in his mission to provide quality education and create opportunities for children to thrive. His innovative leadership also made history as one of the first educational leaders in Dallas to establish Saturday and extended-afternoon learning programs, expanding educational opportunities for students and influencing programs that followed.

His dedication to educational excellence earned him numerous honors, including the proclamation of Dr. Sherwin Allen Day, celebrated annually on June 9 in El Dorado, Arkansas, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education.

While education was his life's work, Dr. Allen also found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved playing pool, golfing, and spending time with family and friends. More than his titles and accomplishments, he will be remembered for his wisdom, unwavering integrity, visionary leadership, and lifelong commitment to helping others reach their fullest potential.

Dr. Allen leaves to cherish his precious memory his devoted wife, Mrs. Jeanette Allen; his children, Sherwin Aaron Allen II and Tiffani Dawn Allen; his beloved grandchildren, Jhordyn Allen, Lauren Allen, Kaila Muhammad, Niime Muhammad II, Raven Allen, Nigel Muhammad, and Noah Muhammad; his sister, Dr. Debra Allen; and a host of extended family members, lifelong friends, colleagues, former students, and all whose lives were forever enriched by knowing him.

Dr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron Allen and Fannie Mae Allen; his sisters, Olean Williams, Mary Joyce Solden, Shirley L. Briggs, Jessie Walker, and Ruby Green; and his brothers, Donald Allen and Dr. Claudis Ray Allen.

Though he has departed this earthly life, Dr. Sherwin Allen, Sr.'s legacy lives on through the generations of students he inspired, the educators he mentored, the schools he transformed, and the family he loved so deeply. His life was a testament to faith, service, leadership, and the enduring belief that education has the power to change lives. His influence will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
