On September 29, 1956, Charlie and Pearline Pumphrey welcomed their first child, Sherlean Pumphrey, into the world. Sherlean's life was defined by unwavering faith, a deep love for her family, and a commitment to her community.
At an early age, Sherlean gave her life to Christ and united with Olive Branch Baptist Church, where she remained a devoted and faithful member until her departure. Her commitment to her faith was unwavering, and her love for worship was evident in everything she did.
Sherlean received her early education at Hugh Goodwin Elementary School, continued through Barton Middle School, and proudly graduated from El Dorado High School in 1974. During her high school years, she was a proud cheerleader, full of school spirit and energy that matched her vibrant personality.
In her professional life, Sherlean worked with dedication and passion across several roles, which allowed her to positively impact many lives. She worked as a clerk at ConAgra, where she demonstrated a strong work ethic and attention to detail. Sherlean also served as a Deputy Clerk at District Court, where she carried out her duties with professionalism and integrity. Later, her nurturing spirit led her to a fulfilling career as a preschool teacher at Fact Inc., where she shared her love of learning with young minds, leaving a lasting impression on both children and parents alike.
Sherlean was a cherished member of the New Olive Branch Church Choir, where her voice uplifted many. She was known for never singing without her beloved afuche, a signature part of her musical expression. Sherlean also shared deep fellowship with her Holy Dancers in Harmony, where her joy and passion for praise through dance shined brightly.
In 1978, Sherlean united in marriage with Rickey Anderson, and from this union, two daughters were born: Shemekia and Jennifer, the apples of her eye. Later in life, in 1998, she united with Lon Chaney, with whom she shared a loving bond until his passing on July 7, 2022.
Sherlean was well known for her love, kindness, and her vibrant, "firecracker" spirit. Her personality lit up every room she entered, and her strength, boldness, and sense of humor left a lasting impact on all who knew her. One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her siblings, those moments of laughter, conversation, and sibling love were some of the most cherished in her life.
On September 8, 2025, at Northern Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston, LA, Sherlean peacefully answered the call to her eternal home. She was welcomed into Heaven by her beloved husband, Lon Chaney, along with a host of family members and friends who preceded her.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith through her daughters: Shemekia Hicks of Ruston, LA, and Jennifer (Marcus) Meeks of Texarkana, TX. She is also lovingly remembered by her bonus daughter, Ashley (Brandon) Nightengale of Marshall, TX.
Her memory lives on through her grandchildren: Halle' Buggs, Jordan Meeks, Tyler (Tori) Hicks, Tristen Thompson, Braylen Meeks, Arianna Nightengale, and Trayveon Nightengale.
Sherlean was deeply loved, and though she may be gone from our sight, she will forever remain in our hearts.
