LaRuth Buggs

Sister LaRuth Hildreth-Buggs, lovingly called Mama Lay, was born on April 19, 1947, in Ogemaw, Arkansas, to Reverend Curtis Hildreth, Sr., and Callie Mae Charles. Raised in a household guided by faith and compassion, she answered the call to serve others from an early age, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. LaRuth's life was characterized by her boundless hospitality and dedication to family, especially as she lovingly raised LaSonja Burris-Harris as her own. In 2004, she married Willie Buggs, who preceded her in death, welcoming Natasha Buggs-Mason as a cherished bonus daughter through their union.

Known for her warm smile and home-cooked meals, LaRuth created welcoming spaces where family and friends gathered, always making each guest feel valued and at home. Faith served as the cornerstone of her life, sustaining her through every challenge and triumph. She found comfort in her favorite song, "The Goodness of God" by Cece Winans, and drew strength from her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

LaRuth's natural ability to bring joy and uplift others shone through in her early years. After graduating from Smackover Training School for Economic and Youth Opportunity Agency in 1965, she moved to California in pursuit of new opportunities. There, she began a journey defined by growth, service, and leadership, joining faith communities such as New Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She also served as an Army veteran, holding the rank of Specialist 5 from 1969 to 1971, and built a long-standing career with the County of Los Angeles. Her commitment to learning led her to earn an LPN degree from Downey Adult School in 1985. Following her retirement in 1997, LaRuth returned to Smackover, Arkansas, where she joined New Mt Zion Baptist Church in Norphlet as Secretary/Treasurer, and later transferred to Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church. In 2021, she relocated to Georgia, where she lived until her peaceful passing on August 19, 2025.

LaRuth was a devoted spouse, a nurturing mother and grandmother to her nieces, nephews, and their families, a cherished sister, beloved aunt, faithful friend, and wise mentor. Her vibrant spirit, unwavering love, and lasting legacy are unforgettable. She is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Buggs; her parents; and her siblings: Thomas, Billy Joe, Helen, Gloria, Melva, Earl, Curtis, Gladys, and Greta.

Her memory endures in the lives of those she touched: her daughters LaSonja and Natasha; in-laws Mary, Callie, Urle, Leroy, Ina, and Patricia; her uncle Warren Charles; godchildren Jasmine LaRuth Harris-Couch and Ashley Lynn Buchanan-James; special friend Priscilla Moody; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who continue her legacy of kindness, generosity, and service.

To know Mama Lay was to love her. Her life was a testament to God's grace, marked by compassion, generosity, and unflagging devotion. She poured her heart into her family, ministry, and community. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of all those she inspired, uplifted, and cherished. We celebrate her life, honor her legacy, and give thanks for the enduring gift of LaRuth Hildreth-Buggs.
