Charles Henry Pumphrey Sr., affectionately known as "C.H.," "One Can," "Charlie," and "Pawpaw," was born on November 15, 1933, in El Dorado, Arkansas, to Ceili Mae Williams and Ray Pumphrey.
C.H. was a longtime member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, where he united under the leadership of Rev. Frank Townsend.
C.H. and Pearline shared a remarkable 72-year journey together, building a lifetime of love, commitment, cherished memories, and family. In September 1995, they made their union official through marriage, celebrating the love and bond they had shared for decades. Their story was a beautiful testament to a love that stood the test of time. Their union was blessed with five children: Sherlean, Charles, Belinda, Lettie, and Shandra.
A skilled carpenter by trade and a true jack-of-all-trades, C.H. was a man who could work with his hands and always find a way to get things done. Beyond his craftsmanship, he had a special love for horses, especially his first horse, "Trigger," and his beloved black stallion, "Midnight."
C.H. was a man who never met a stranger. His outgoing personality and unmistakable storytelling style made every conversation memorable. In fact, he could talk for hours without a comma, period, or question mark! He enjoyed blues music and his Budweiser beer, earning him the nickname "One Can," a name that became a beloved part of who he was.
C.H. was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherlean Chaney; his grandson, Jay Moore; and his parents, Ceili Mae Williams and Ray Pumphrey.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Pearline Pumphrey, affectionately known as "Memaw"; his children, whom he lovingly called "Charlie's Angels": Charles Pumphrey Jr., Belinda Jordan, Lettie (Darius) Williams, and Shandra (Elmer) Mayweather, all of El Dorado, Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; and more than 50 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Though his earthly journey has come to an end, the love he gave, the laughter he shared, the lessons he taught, and the legacy he built will live on through the generations of family he leaves behind. Charles Henry Pumphrey Sr. will forever be remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
