Bruce "Chief" Smith

Bruce Dewayne Smith, affectionately known as "Chief," passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 63. Born on October 14, 1962, Bruce was a lifelong resident of El Dorado, Arkansas, where he was known, respected, and loved by many.

Bruce attended El Dorado High School and graduated with the Class of 1981. As a child, he was a faithful member of Union Mission Baptist Church, where he developed the values of faith, family, and community that remained with him throughout his life.

Bruce had a passion for cooking, grilling, and working on cars. Whether preparing meals for family and friends or spending hours under the hood of a vehicle, he found joy in using his hands and sharing his talents with others. He was known for teaching valuable life lessons, solving problems, and always being someone his family could depend on for guidance and support. Bruce was truly the glue that held his family together, bringing people closer through his wisdom, love, and unwavering presence.

He also had a deep love for music and was known for playing it loud, filling every room with songs and creating lasting memories with those around him. His easygoing personality, infectious sense of humor, and familiar nickname made him a beloved figure throughout the El Dorado community.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Hicks-Smith and Elmer Smith; his brothers, Luther Ray Smith, John Eddie Smith, Charles Ray Smith, and Lonnie Earl Hicks; his sister, Alberta Sims (Sam Sims); and his great-nephew, Day'Shawn Smith.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his five children: Dolores Harris; Shakema Weston (Xavier); Cordero Smith (J'Mia); Chasney Smith; and Braelyn Smith (Joselyn Miller). He also leaves his devoted and loving companion, Mary Brown, along with her children, LiQuita Davis, Dontisha Davis, Ruby Davis, and Davante Jackson, whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his siblings, Elmer Charles Smith, Mary Shutes, Jonah Johnson, and Shirley Rochelle; a host of grandchildren, bonus grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; his lifelong best friend, Daniel Willis; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever remember his kindness, humor, generosity, and unconditional love.

Bruce's legacy lives on through the love he shared with his family, the lessons he taught, the friendships he built, and the countless lives he touched throughout the community. His legacy is found not only in what he accomplished but also in the kindness, generosity, unwavering love, and example he set for others to follow. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
